Can you recover deleted text messages from a cell phone?

Hi – my name is Jesse Lindmar We are often asked: Can you recover deleted text messages from
a mobile phone? The ability to recover deleted text messages
depends on the make and model of the mobile phone, the length of time that has passed
since the messages were deleted, the number of new text messages that have been sent or
received since the messages were deleted, and whether the deleted messages have been
overwritten. The make and model of the phone gives us a
general idea of where we would expect the deleted text messages to be stored and whether
that area of the phone is accessible. There are two major categories of mobile phones:
Smartphones and Feature Phones. The most popular Smartphones would include
Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android, Microsoft’s Windows Phone, and RIM’s BlackBerry devices. Feature phones are pretty much everything
else; having some of the basic “features” of smartphones, but lacking an overall integration
with the phone’s operating system and hardware, and with limited user-customization options. Many feature phones have a limited number
of “slots” to store text messages, and the number of slots will vary across manufacturers
and can even vary across similar phone models from the same manufacturer. When these slots are full, the phone will
begin to overwrite the older text messages with the newer ones – a process that renders
the older messages unrecoverable. Smartphones typically store text messages
within a database files. Deleted text messages can typically be recovered
from these databases; occasionally previous versions of the databases still containing
the text messages can be recovered; and sometimes fragmented messages can be recovered from
other areas of the phone. However, certain smartphones are by default
encrypted and this prevents the recovery of previous database versions and fragmented
messages. Most smartphones also come with backup or
syncing software that can create backups of the phone’s data – sometimes these backups
are created even without the user’s knowledge. If a backup was created during a time where
the deleted text messages were still on the phone, then the backup becomes another potential
source for recovery. A mobile phone does not retain deleted text
messages indefinitely. No one can guarantee how many text messages
can be recovered or promise to recover all deleted text messages sent or received on
certain dates. Furthermore, if the make/model of phone is
not supported by the forensic hardware/software that is used to communicate with the phone,
then data cannot be recovered. If you need help recovering deleted text messages,
let us know the make and model of the phone. Here’s our contact information.
