It’s a great morning for baking and Nana
is making cookies with José Jr. Hmm…chocolate chip! It’s Toronto Hydro and they’re telling
Nana she needs to pay her bill or she’ll be disconnected immediately! They tell her to purchase a prepaid credit card from a gas station or the post office. “Whoa,” says José Jr. “Don’t give them anything!” He realizes that Nana is being preyed on by a popular scam targeting individuals and small businesses. Nana does the right thing. She doesn’t give out any of her personal or account information and hangs up on the scammers. Toronto Hydro never asks for payment by prepaid credit card and will never disconnect power immediately. Nana’s is a little shaken but she picks up the phone again to report the call to Toronto Hydro’s Customer Care department and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. The more the authorities know about the scam, the better their chances are of putting a stop to it. Don’t be a victim of the telephone scam. Remember, if something seems suspicious, it probably is.
