Europe Calling – 1st Call: Hello Democracy!

Europe Calling – 1st Call: Hello Democracy!

in a few weeks time just between the
23rd and the 26th of May there will be European elections and we as Europeans
will vote for a new Parliament I’d like to use the outstanding benefits of a
Skype video call in order to record three conversation with you about
European democracy social and economic cohesion and the question whether there
is a European culture what are you from the civil society out there think about
this well and it’s great to see that you’re already here guys I would like to
introduce to you a Polina freely who reached out to her in Berlin she is
working at the Berlin basing tank that’s polkas Eva temple and last year she made
a journey through Germany called Europe is listening to you so she will be a
great partner to talk with us today hello
to Berlin hello Carina I would like to say hello as well to Hector Sanchez
Hector Sanchez is working at the think-tank see dope in Barcelona
it’s a Catalan think-tank and he has the research focus on European government
and you political movements great to see actors Paulina would you say that euro
skepticism is what was part of your journey yes definitely we had
participants were who I would classify as your skeptic and they did themselves
surely it was part and this this find a voice as well in German political
debates at the moment yeah I feel that euro scepticism is shaping the discourse
in Europe right now a lot and I think that it mostly is becoming visible in
all the pro European messages and voices so there’s like so many entities and so
many organizations now making a pro-european statement which is good in
a way but same time to be honest I’m worried that all the differences which
are important to discuss between the pro Europeans are getting neglected mm-hmm
okay um Hector I would say southern Europe is always perceived as a whole
but it doesn’t seem like this I mean you were all hit
by year and by an economic crisis there are still debates about unemployment
there are still debates about how to commonly care for refugees nevertheless
when I look at Italy in Greece I have the impression that euro skepticism is
higher than these countries then in Spain and Portugal mmm first of all I
would like to differentiate between being you can be repeated I think this
is been important to distinguish and now to the question you you said yes I think
there’s much difference between Spain Portugal Italy and Greece if the
assessing of the Union is is in order to improve it because and this in Spain
Airport well the euro was most famous as a step towards the democratization of
the country so this also this idea that once you become out they after you there
was there was nothing back to these days yeah and I think you made a really
interesting point because we should not forget that the motivation that the
country’s motivation to join our European Union is different no I mean
for Spain in Portugal Europe was as well not only the way to Europe but it was as
well the way to democratization to the white modernization and this is why the
perception is different than in the country like Germany who joined Europe
but basically after the Second World War as a founder no of course go ahead go
ahead fully agree with Hector what he said in
the beginning about criticism and skepticism and that is also one of the
learnings and takeaways we take from our project journey so we found that some of
the participants wanted to make a critical point on Europe or the European
Union how almost afraid to make that point in
order to not be considered skeptic skeptics and we are project team believe
that is very important right now from the European Union to give this signal
the critic critics and constructive criticism is wanted and it’s eating
something European it is something yeah I mean yeah that that’s generally well a
nice answer the nice perception but but I was wondering how to beat this euro
scepticism that is an populist party who are making politics against Europe which
we can find in the even myself I can share some of the day messaging out of
the problem the solutions sometimes let’s say mean this sounds quite easy
somehow but maybe there is some truth behind it no it sounds easy but
listening isn’t easy then especially is Hector said to people who you think are
not right politically talks politician comes in the worst case sits on a stage
which is above the others and is like the information hub and then you may ask
questions in a my answer so we say no actually what we need is more platforms
for citizens to talk to each other because our participants were not that
much interested in needing an expert on politician out they just wanted to enjoy
talking to each other listening to each other yeah but then they have to make
sure that to implement if it’s possible what they have been told and if it’s not
possible to explain whines let’s look forward let’s look to the European
Parliament and the European Union after the European elections Thursday’s big
debate in Germany especially after brexit that will be of the South so what
is this if I’m a quick get something for me it always sounds but living here in
Spain from you it always sounds quite surprising that we are talking about
Germany and France as the European Motors and I’m some time thinking what
should other country things like Portugal like Greece are they not can
they not be part of a European motor but since you mention it I believe that if
we talk about motors and by the way I was just sitting in a car a couple of
days ago with a good friend of mine who we were listening to the radio and it
was all about Europe and I we played bullshit bingo on the word French German
motor so yes it appears a lot into Wow this is a word of a boutique bingo
lyrics German motor well and if I may ask was the driver French or German
German German okay wow so well there is even a big criticism within Germany yes
definitely so no what I’m saying is I believe that a
moat or and of can be described not only it’s not only about the financial
resources a country gives in or the number of people living at that country
but also about common interests shared interest but here we get to the problem
I do not see the threat of or the fear of southern dominance I see red or I
have the fear of a destructive dominance in the European Parliament after the
elections okay now there’s a threat coming something threatening the basic
idea of a European Union and the common values into working together the
integration itself so our energy in our time and our resources and now like we
are first to fight it and to to make a move to to deal with all those
skepticism and with all those destructive powers instead of sitting
together and looking forward as you said looking into the future and discussing
how we go on so this is actually where I’m seeing the problem after the
election so if I can go back once again to Hector motor needs been seen needs
compostable now you say in Spanish what kind of benzene can you give to the
European motor from Spain the importance of the importance of being present in
the big debates and I think that Spain is ready now to contribute with with
with proper proposals and with with plans and we part of this German French
engine and what Spain can do to is to talk to smaller countries because it’s
not as big a Germany and France small as let’s say portable and forgive
me portal but there’s a link that can be made and it’s being a Pedro certainly
and I guess that Spain is willing to play new roles or at least a more
important thing it’s time for Spain okay let’s leave it with this yes okay so
basically that’s it well have a nice rest of the week you and bye bye ciao
thank you thank you thank you
