Invisible Phone Cameras Are Here

Invisible Phone Cameras Are Here

Over the weekend We just got a look at the first under display camera that we’ve seen in a functional or seemingly functional prototype and this was a video brought up by Oppo on their social media account but they have a front-facing camera that is hidden under the display. and then a few hours later Xiaomi another chinese company puts out a video with the same kind of technology and this video quality’s a little bit better They’re showcasing a device that looks very much like a mi 9 but it also has a fully functioning front-facing selfie camera And it’s crazy. like this is technology that we’ve been seeking or the phone manufacturing world has been seeking for the past little while we started off with the phone with a notch the essential phone and then the iPhone had a notch and then every Android phone start to have notches And then we started to get phones this year with things that aren’t notches but aren’t really like, you know This isn’t the final form that we’re looking for. We have pop-up cameras. We have flip up cameras. We have devices that are trying to circumvent the whole notch and punch hole technology. But the reality is that they’re all trying to achieve a completely natural bezzel-less flip up camera list device and that’s what these prototypes are showing now from what I understand the way that they’re achieving this is that they’re turning off the pixels right in front of the camera sensors so on a regular OLED display It’s just a bunch of diodes that are being lit and when they turn off Particular diodes and you can turn off individually ones on an OLED panel when you turn off a set of diodes Whatever’s behind it now has a less obstructed line-of-sight So if you look at this still from the xiaomi video you can still see that the camera with this under display sensor Still has a camera visible on that prototype. It’s subtle, but it’s there It’s not as evident as the regular mean and that’s beside it But it’s definitely there So they’ve turned off the diodes in that region which allows the camera to be able to shoot through it But the problem is that that area that’s been turned off is not optically transparent It’s translucent we can obviously see through it to some degree But it’s not a super clean image and that’s the problem that all these manufacturers are facing right now. anyone who’s chasing this under display sensor, under display camera has to figure out how to clean up that image because when you shoot through those diodes Even if they’re off it’s not clean and they’re going to need software or some kind of algorithm to clean up that image as best as they can and maybe they can use maybe two cameras so that you have basically two data points to work with and then they be able to combine that. I’m not exactly sure what the techniques are that they could use for this but that is the problem they’re facing right now. How do we clean up that image? So that it is acceptable in today’s Selfie camera market And keep in mind that these guys aren’t first, right. Samsung’s been working on this technology for quite a while now Even in 2018 there were showing slides of how they were working on some under display sensors and in earlier this year They showed like their whole infinity display lineup with the new infinity being the one that’s the end goal But it’s super interesting to me that these two Chinese companies out of nowhere showcase this technology in a fully functioning prototype. So for me, like I’m not someone that uses selfie cameras very often So I’d be very willing to eat image quality on my front-facing camera for that technology today Obviously, they’re probably not going to do that Like they want to get a front-facing image that’s comparable to a regular front-facing selfie camera, right? Obviously that’s what most people are going for. But I think for a lot of people myself included would just eat crap front-facing image quality for that technology today I mean, I’m willing to put up with the terrible camera on a 12-inch MacBook That’s like a 480p camera that looks like garbage but whoever brings that technology to the market first like whoever does it, is gonna have a banger because it resolved things like having moving parts and having reduced water resistance ratings and stuff like that having a under display camera sensor is like…. It’s the dream. Okay, that basically wraps it up. I think this technology is cool I’m really glad that we were able to see something this early on. I did not expect it. It’s crazy that This went from a neat idea to a seemingly functional prototype in a very short period of time. And that’s really cool Obviously, there’s a lot more work to be done. But I like what I see. Okay. Hope you guys enjoyed this video Thumbs if you liked it
Subs if you loved it. See you guys next time

  1. And I hope it will not get easily damage because its now part of the screen. The above of the lens could get tap a thousand times especially in gaming.

  2. Since the front facing is not macro lensed those diode will be out of focus and can be erased in a good post processing

  3. Are you doing fine dave? Your eyes seems like they don't have enough sleep…love your content, keep up the good work

  4. Up until facdid and maybe video calling, I still don’t understand why people couldn’t just turn their damn phones around all this time. All the damn mirror shots is what forced selfie cams on us in the first place.

  5. Apple in 2045 – TODAY WE PRESENT TO YOU under display front facing cameras

Meanwhile in xiaomi or oppo: Did you guys release that firmware update, that supports pocket particle accelerator yet?

  6. we are all focusing trying to make the camera and images work better but the same shitting audio sound when someone is one the phone remains the same. sometimes you get cut off and it's annoying when trying to hear someone speak.

  7. I feel like every tech youtuber always underestimates the power of the front facing camera and always alludes to it being vain to care about that camera. As a tech enthusiast, I would not just eat anything to get that notchless design, because the front facing camera is the source of so much life and sharing and expression. People have carriers built on the front facing camera of a phone, and call their families and get to see them in great quality, and capturing a moment with people you love. The front facing camera is a portrait of modern day, and self conscious, predominately male tech yourtubers should really accept that.

  8. You know how we banned Huawei for allegedly spying on us without our consent? And how we are constantly suing/bringing to court Google, Amazon & Facebook for stealing our information?? And how Snowden risked his life to show us the truth about the government using our cameras secretly???

Well folks, now you can have your photo stolen, and camera remotely started without your consent, and not even know about it! YAY! PROGRESSION! ::eyeroll::

  9. Just release a phone without front facing camera, I don't take selfies, I don't use it, don't need it, won't miss it.

  10. The idea is great. Another thing to point out about selfies is the eyes, if this under display camera could be put in the center of the phone (or close) , video calls will looks so much better.

  11. What if smaller versions already exist and are installed in every laptop/tv so the NSA can watch you… lol

I wonder if tech 10 years from now is actually out today but organizations control how quickly technology is released o.O

  12. >Camera under screen developed.

    Government Surveilance Level 100

Srs tho, what if NSA had major TV/monitor manufacturers sneak improved versions of these so they could visually monitor 99% of homes. George Orwell's 1984 getting more and more plausible each day 😮

  13. OR, why not just get rid of the front facing camera so the government can't see my face all day in high definition !

  14. Donald Trump: Ok, Xiaomi and OPPO are to be banned. Americans cheering: we invented 5G, we invented under screen camera phone. Huawei: How can they "invented something" they don't have?

  15. FUCK YEAH !!!!! this is ALMOST what we've all been waiting for……… now just have to wait for Samsung start production on them, so it can make it to the states

  16. Shooting through the OLED pixels would-be like shooting a photo through a dirty window. Like you said, if they can create an algorithm to cancel out the OLED pixels, they're on a winner.

  17. Why people so desperately need cameras in their smartpones? Especially the frontal one. I would prefer a pure rectangle screen thousands times more to the frontal camera. I have four stupid cameras in my new Xiaomi but do not use them at all. I am not a photographer and not sixteen years old to make selphies in front of Taj-Mahal. These cameras are simply dead weight to me. Give me a smartphone without cameras for one dollar cheaper and I will be happy. Ok, left a single camera on smarphone's back for the rare case of the first contact with Aliens and for my car's insurer.

  18. It's ok if the pic quality a bit low. I just need my front camera to do a video call not some fancy selfie pics of me to post on instagram.

  19. Can’t wait for devices like these to hit the market… I watch this video every day now, so excited for this tech breakthrough.

  20. As someone who video calls everyday i believe front facing cameras have a higher purpose than taking selfies.

  21. Idk what to do I wanna get the s10+ but then the 1+70 pro is so cool with no notch but then all these videos about new phones without any of the motorized cameras and having a full display idk what to do

  22. I know this idea is stupid and propably wont work but why do the phone manufacturers not use the screen it self as a lense by bending ore curving the whole screen ever so slightly because then the camera wouldn't focus the screen in the slightest… I think.

Please correct my if you think I'm wrong ore know I'm.

  23. Davee.. love to see you growing at such faster rate… What is the best strategy for us.. please suggest

  24. Seriously this is a missed opportunity!
Why don't you put it in the middle of the screen so that video calls finally has eye contact?

  25. 1984 in the most futuristic way you could imagine…
Turn your mobile data off after using it… Don't leave it on Eva!

  26. Throwing this idea out: Implement a low profile flash to shoot through the glass for improved selfie quality. Not one you could see, but one that's just powerful enough to make the transparency optimal. It could fire so fast the user shouldn't even be able to see it. Just be careful it doesn't glitch and neither gives epilepsy attacks. A small LED array at each side of the under display camera should be able to do the trick.

Either that or see if a polarized material can be used for most of the pannels so when you shoot a light through it they become clearer. You could have some channels in there at microscopic level using the concept of glowing logos like in the ROG or RAZER phones.

  27. Why's the comment section disabled on the videos of official Apple youtube channel. ??
am i the only one who is not able to see those comments ???

  28. Cant they just use the thin bezel to put the camera in it. Cant they use the display as the camera. Cant they just use an entire different concept its been ten years and were still using the same smart phone.

  29. pop up camera sounds better for security… I hear there are apps that spy on users via access to camera and microphone…

  30. How long until motels, hotels, bfs/gfs and so on start installing almost untraceable cameras behind the tv, mirror, etc. For blackmail, porn, money, and whatnot. Place your bet!! I say 2 to 5 years.

  31. I would take it too, used my selfie camera only like few times in 2 years, if I want a selfie I take mirror picture, or ask someone to take picture of me. I just dont like them at all, I want oneplus 7 pro, but sadly my mobile carrier doesnt have it 🙁

  32. گلولي اشترك بل قنا وفعل جرس ولايك واربح إكس بوكس ون أو العاب نت صدق لو لا بروح ابيك صدق إذا هاي اشترك

  33. To be honest, I am not ready to give up quality for no notch… I would also miss Face ID on apple and Huawei

  34. Just add a bezel. Under screen cameras are a waste of time & money. Bezels look nice & are cool. Notches , punches & teardrops are just plain ugly. Phone makers can just add even sized bezels top & bottom & have all the cameras & sensors they want PLUS front facing speakers. Bezelless designs seem to just add cost with no value. Bring back the bezel.

  35. I have been waiting for this phone since when notch display came and I hate notch and pop up camera. I knew it that it will definitely happen because I believe in technology. When I saw Samsung Note 10 video, I really loved that phone but I always wanted the camera hidden in the display. Now my dream comes true. So I'll buy the Samsung or Sony or One plus or Google whoever will release it first. ❤

  36. Samsung needs to do this for their next S line-up release for the S11, 11 plus, 11e and whatever else they release next year at the Unpacked event! Completely do away with the notch and do what they did with the fingerprint sensor, move it under the display so it's not so intrusive
