VoIP/Digital Phone vs. Landlines | Start.ca Support Videos

Hi, my name is Jacob, from the Start
dot C-A service desk, and today we’re looking at the differences between Start dot C-A “VoIP” telephone service, versus traditional phone services, to hopefully
help you decide which is the best fit for you. To begin, let’s start with the
word “VoIP”. “VoIP” stands for, “Voice over Internet Protocol”. This is a telephone
service that uses your internet service to work, instead of traditional phone
lines. With “VoIP”, you don’t need to buy a special telephone. You use the one you
already have. All you need to make it work is this little adapter. The voice
adapter. Check out our “VoIP” unboxing and set up video for more information on how
to connect this. With “VoIP”, you can call any phone number. The person on the other
end does not need to be using a “VoIP” connection. They can be on a traditional
landline. With Start dot C-A “VoIP” service you get
a local telephone number that can make calls, and take calls just as you would
with a regular landline. If you’re switching from a traditional landline to
Start dot C-A “VoIP” service, you’ll probably even be able to keep your
existing phone number. We’ll help you with that during sign up. One of the key
differences between “VoIP” and landline phones, is that if your internet
connection, or electricity are interrupted, you will not have phone
service. That might not be a huge issue with mobile phones being so common
nowadays. One of the great things about “VoIP” is that you can take it, and your
phone number, with you. The adapter is small enough to travel with and in
Canada it will work anywhere you can connect to wired internet. If that kind
of flexibility is what you’re after, then “VoIP” could be a good choice for you. If
you do this, it’s important to remember that you must log in to our customer
portal and update your 9-1-1 address to where your “VoIP” adapter is now installed. In an emergency, 9-1-1 will use the address registered in our customer portal to
help locate you. 9-1-1 can’t detect where your VoIP adapter is physically
installed, so it’s very important to keep this information up-to-date. Visit Start

information. Cost-wise, Start dot C-A “VoIP” phone services can be
considerably less expensive than other phone services. We offer a variety of
affordable packages, with unlimited calling within Canada,
the United States, and around the world to 65 other countries, currently. For
pricing and details, see Start dot C-A, forward slash services, forward slash
phone. Our “VoIP” service also has some really
neat features that you may not have with your traditional landline, such as a
built-in voicemail with email notification. This sends an audio copy of
your voicemail, to your email — which is handy if you’re away from your VoIP
phone, or if you need to send a message to someone else. Start dot C-A “VoIP” service also includes call waiting, call forwarding, caller I-D and even three-way
calling, at no additional cost. Landlines generally provide good call quality.
“VoIP” connections are usually very good, but remember, it depends on your internet
connection. And that can potentially affect the quality of your calls. That
being said, if you ever did have an issue of a call quality you can contact us 24
hours a day. We’ll be happy to help. “VoIP” is a great phone service, however
there are some things it doesn’t support. Emergency, and hospital use. Fax. Apartment
door buzzers, or business use. Keep these in mind when considering whether “VoIP” is
a good fit for you, and feel free to contact us if you have any questions
about our VoIP telephone service — or any of our other services. We’re here 24-7.
