What if new mobile phone antennas could save the world?

When we had these smartphones with touch screen – no-one knew how they would change the world, but obviously the world has changed a lot. Definition of internet of things is that, we have internet of things when all the things
are connected that benefit from a connection. As the number of connected devices increases
all the time the most important thing is the energy efficiency. The more we put devices there the more energy they consume Mobile phone antennas work quite ok if they
are in air but if I hold the device in my hand
typically my hand disturbs the fields in this device – and efficiency can drop down to one percent so I waste 99% of the energy. So my near future objective is to make an antenna
that can adapt to its environment and thus save lots of energy. And this is very important thing because our mobile networks have carbon dioxide footprint equal to about one third of global aviation. So if we could even double the efficiency that would mean that we reduce carbon footprint
as much as if we stopped flying for couple of months every year. Aalto has been one of the leading universities
developing telecommunications hardware and also software. And we have the whole ecosystem for developing these kinds of things We collaborate with large companies like Huawei,
Nokia, Qualcomm and many smaller ones. And I believe that without this kind of collaboration
network it is really difficult to make a major breakthrough, but now that we have
all the players together – we have that chance
